FAQ's - Subscriptions

1. What editions are available?

The Otago Daily Times - Digital Edition is published daily Monday to Saturday. It is not published on Good Friday or Christmas Day. All published editions are available as a digital edition.

2. When are digital editions made available online?

The Otago Daily Times - Digital Edition is created electronically at the same time the print edition is being printed and distributed. The digital edition is available early each morning of publication, generally around the same time that print editions are being delivered.

3. What subscription plans are available?

There is a wide range of plan options available for individual users. These options include subscription packages of 3, 6 or 12 months. Alternately, you may wish to simply purchase a number of copies and as you access each copy it will be drawn down on the credit payment you have made. The subscription options can be viewed by selecting Subscribe from the panel on the left.

4. What do I get when I buy an online edition?

You get all the editorial and photographic material that you’ll find in the printed version of the paper, as well as all the advertising. You get all the sections, all the news, all the sport and all the regular features.
With Saturdays edition of The Otago Daily Times you get all the printed sections that form part of the paper, but you should note that some commercial inserts will not be included. Allied Press reserves the right to omit material from the digital edition in the event that a legal liability may result from the electronic distribution of such material.

5. Can I print the electronic version?

Yes, if you wish to do so. Or you can print just particular stories and/or articles.

6. Can I sell the material from the online edition?

No, you can't. All material published is subject to the copyright laws of New Zealand.

7. What is the cost of the Digital Edition?

The subscription charges for our premium digital products is approximately the same as purchasing the print edition. The Digital Edition is identical to the print edition of the Otago Daily Times.
Whilst access to the premium digital version of the Otago Daily Times carries full published content and is charged for, access to the online edition ( remains free.




FAQ's - Usage

Help! I can't read the articles on the page, the type is too small

This is usual: You need to click on the article to bring it up in the article viewer. This is much like the old online edition where stories were listed and you selected the story to view. Treat the page view as a graphical index to the stories on that page.
To read articles or advertisements in the Otago Daily Times, move the mouse over the article, and then click to load the requested item. If the text is too small or too large when viewing the article, change to the view mode to Quick View, and then change the font size to the appropriate level.

Where can I find the Family Notices?

On the front page of every ODT is an "Index" which links to the key sections in the ODT. This includes a link to Family Notices or BDMs (Births, Deaths and Marriages).

On weekdays the Family Notices are usually located on the weather page. You can use the "Weather & BDM" Quick Links menu item to quickly navigate to this page.

Weekend editions of the Otago Daily Times will have a separate section labeled "Family Notices".

How do I jump to different sections of the paper?

Selecting the Quick Links on the left hand side of provides access to the main sections of the paper, while selecting the title from each of the links brings up the article within these sections.
The Table of Contents (in the Features menu item directly above the ODT page) also provides access to the sections in the paper.

When can I access today's newspaper online?

The current day's newspaper will be placed online before 7am on the day of publication.

Help! I am getting stuck in the 'Loading..' screen!

If you are using Internet Explorer and are getting stuck on the 'Loading..' screen, please ensure your security settings are set to "Medium" or less. To do this in Internet Explorer

  1. Open Internet Explorer
  2. Click on the "Tools" menu
  3. Select the "Internet Options" menu item
  4. Select the "Security" tab (top left of the new box that appeared)
  5. Select the "Internet" zone (first icon on the left in the security tab you just selected)
  6. Click the "Default Level" button (bottom right of this box). If you cannot click on it, move to step 7 below
  7. Adjust the slider on the left to "Medium" or lower. Ensure it is *not* set to "High"
  8. Click ok
  9. Visit again

I get a "bad server response” (NSURLErrorDomain:-1011)" error on every page or article I load!

This is a known issue in Safari and will be fixed in a future release of the software. This is not an issue with our website and will not prevent you from browsing the Otago Daily Times using this browser.

Help! I can only see garbled text when viewing the Digital Edition or Digital Archive.

This may be caused if you have an application installed on your computer called "Norton System Utilities 2006". Please be aware that you may not be able to view the Digital Edition or Digital Archive if you have this application installed.

Linking Policy

  • The Digital Edition of the ODT is a copyrighted work. All digitally published content shall remain available from the and websites only.
  • Commercial licensing of published material is handled by the Print Media Copyright Agency of New Zealand.
  • The Otago Daily Times Digital content is a subscription oriented service, and therefore no linking is possible.
  • The downloading and use of editorial or photographic digital content is prohibited without the permission of the newspaper.
  • The copying or reproduction of advertising material for any use (for example other websites) is prohibited without both the prior written permission of the newspaper and the permission of the advertiser.
